A Voice for Accessibility and Inclusion

Learn about our community and our goals!
The Disability Advocates Union is a student organization in Ithaca, New York dedicated to advocating for a more equitable world for people with disabilities.
In 2021, a group of Cornell University students realized that our school had no undergraduate organization for students with disabilities. The previous organization had been left unattended and unsupported, while students with disabilities were being directed towards a support system that did not exist. In collaboration with advocates from the previous organization, students founded the Disability Awareness Union to serve as a space for all students seeking a more inclusive world.
At the Disability Advocates Union, we strive to create a space for students interested in disability rights to come together to discuss shared interests, advance community knowledge, and advocate for fair treatment regardless of ability status
We want to create resources that ensure everyone who needs accommodations on campus can gain access to them without barriers or burdens.
We aim to bring students with disabilities together to advocate within Ithaca for universal design and inclusive policy
We strive to create spaces where students can find and discuss shared experiences in safe and understanding spaces
We hope to educate the Cornell community on the experience of students with disabilities in higher education
We work to consistently evaluate our school for potential issues with accessibility
We seek to provide avenues for students to voice any concerns they may have, and to center student's experiences in shaping decisions on campus

Land Acknowledgement
This land acknowledgment has been reviewed and approved by the traditional Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫɁ leadership: Cornell University is located on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫɁ (the Cayuga Nation). The Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫɁ are members of the Hodinǫ̱hsǫ́:nih Confederacy, an alliance of six sovereign Nations with a historic and contemporary presence on this land. The Confederacy precedes the establishment of Cornell University, New York state, and the United States of America. We acknowledge the painful history of Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫɁ dispossession, and honor the ongoing connection of Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫɁ people, past and present, to these lands and waters.
In addition to the land acknowledgment but separate from it, the students in the Disability Advocates Union would like to recognize that Cornell's founding played a direct role in the dispossession of millions of Indigenous People which eventually led to a genocide through taking the land that was stolen under the Morrill Act of 1862.
